The wear resistance of cutting edges for snow plow blades, motorgraders, and underbody blades is an important factor determining the cost of winter highway maintenance. The evaluation of durability of cutting edges, however, is not generic but tends to be based on the specifications used by a manufacturer or highway maintenance agency. To ensure that the cutting edges purchased meet the required durability, a test procedure that allows for quick evaluation of the cutting edges on the basis of which they may be accepted or rejected is desirable. Although there is a 'Test Method for Abrasion Wear Resistance of Cemented Carbides, ASTM B 611-85,' this method is not suitable for the in situ test of cutting edges. In light of the above comments, a study was undertaken to seek an appropriate material parameter to evaluate the wear resistance of cutting edges and a simple test methodology to measure the parameter. This paper presents some results of the study. The scratch test was identified as a simple and convenient testing method for the evaluation of cutting edges. A testing setup peculiar to the scratch test of cutting edges was designed and built, and the corresponding testing procedures were developed. An important parameter that can be obtained from the scratch test is the scratch hardness. It was found that the scratch hardness correlated very well with the wear resistance of cutting edges and might be used to evaluate the durability of the cutting edges.
