This chapter presents an analysis conducted to determine the optimal dedicated short‐range communications (DSRC) data rate for supporting vehicle safety communications. The basic idea is to compare communication scenarios featuring different channel loads and observe how the network performance varies with the communication data rates. To facilitate comparisons among different scenarios, the chapter introduces the notion of communication density (CD), a metric to estimate the overall channel load in the context of vehicle safety communications. CD is used to create different traffic scenarios associated with comparable channel loads. The communications generated by these traffic scenarios are then simulated to determine the optimal data rate for DSRC. The results show that CD can effectively support the study of vehicle safety communications. communication system security; wireless communication
