First, HEV characteristics, classification, and configuration are introduced. Vehicle dynamic model is developed based on physical principles governing the motion of vehicle. Road load characteristics are analyzed. Vehicle performance constraints including initial acceleration, cruise speed, maximum speed, gradeability, and drive range are discussed in the context of drive cycles. Several examples are given to illustrate fundamental concepts and methods for EV component sizing. As the two most fundamental types of hybrid vehicles, series HEV and parallel HEV are analyzed in detail. A fuel cell EV is used as a design example for series hybrid. Another design example is given for a parallel hybrid vehicle. Vehicle performance constraints are satisfied in powertrain component sizing for the example HEVs. Finally, vehicle wheel slip dynamics is discussed using single‐wheel braking model.
