Fast‐charging stations are used to recharge the EVs in lesser time duration (typically 30–60 minutes from 0% SoC to 100% SoC). In this method, EV batteries are charged with fast chargers which draw high power from the source and charge the EV batteries in a lesser time duration. The typical power rating of fast chargers is in the range of 50–300 kW. During the charging period, chargers will draw the rated power from the source and sometimes it leads to power imbalance or mismatch (generation ≠ demand). Energy storage system (ESS) plays an important role to reduce the power mismatch and maintain the load‐generation balance. Also, ESS employed with renewable energy‐powered charging stations can be used to store the excess energy whenever the renewable generation is higher than the fast‐charging station load demand and energy stored in the ESS can be used to charge the EVs whenever the renewable generation is lesser than the fast‐charging stations' load demand. This chapter discusses the energy storage system when employed along with renewable energy sources, microgrids, and distribution system enhances the performance, reliability, and flexibility in the operation of fast‐charging stations.
