This chapter deals with the quantification of road transport non‐exhaust particulate matter (PM) emissions in terms of emission factors (EFs). It presents the methodology applied for the determination of the EFs of various key pollutants and the vehicle categories taken into account and discusses the database produced. The pollutants include PM2.5, PM10, particle number, elemental carbon, organic matter, seven metals and 28 PAHs. There are two general approaches for determining EFs from non‐exhaust sources: direct measurements from the sources, either under real‐world test conditions or in the laboratory; and receptor modeling method. In general, the EFs derived correspond to two different urban conditions and to rural and highway conditions. EFs included in the database correspond to tyre, brake and road wear components of equation whereas resuspension and studded tyre components are given separately for PCs, LDVs, HDVs and buses.
