This chapter introduces the concepts and technologies of basic diesel engine control. It provides an overview of the diesel engine system, its operation, and control goals. The chapter then deals with torque control. Even though torque is the fundamental control objective, there are several other objectives related to environment protection. The two main systems that handle these challenges are fuel injection control and gas flow control. A realistic control problem in heavy duty diesel engines is used to illustrate the characteristics of coordinated exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbine (VGT) control. A diesel engine can be fitted with different systems for treatment of the exhaust gas after it has left the cylinder such as diesel oxidation‐type catalytic converter and particulate filter.
