To begin analyzing conflicts within outer space, the first step is to examine existing deployments to deduce areas of interest and “friction zones”. Next, it makes sense to consider the theater being opened up by the development of space planes allowing access to the aerospace transition zone (ATZ). The chapter considers strategic analysis of combat in orbit, and assesses the consequences of destructions in outer space. It takes a prospective stance and debates the advantages of the five following locations: the Moon's surface; lunar orbits; Earth‐Moon Lagrange points; very high Earth orbits (VHEO); and Earth‐Sun Lagrange points. Space Situational Awareness (SSA) being supposedly pre‐acquired, the first objective for a space power consists of establishing what the previously cited US Joint Publication 3‐14 (JP 3‐14) refers to as Defensive Space Control (DSC). This defensive control of space is the first pillar of SC, the second being Offensive Space Control (OSC).
