This chapter presents the definition of payload, types of payloads, and some unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) design considerations regarding the selection, installation, and integration of payloads. In addition, it describes the payloads of a number of UAVs, and the features of some popular payloads. Payloads can classified as cargo or freight, reconnaissance or surveillance, scientific, military, and electronic counter measure. The UAVs described are RQ‐4 Global Hawk; RQ‐7 Shadow 200; RQ‐5A Hunter; MQ‐9 Predator B Reaper; DJI Phantom Quadcopter; and X‐45 Unmanned combat air vehicle. Cargo/freight payloads are civil goods, merchandize, or products that are transported for commercial profit. The three primary functions of surveillance sensors are detection, recognition, and identification. An electronic countermeasure payload is a dummy air vehicle, or an electronic device, or a communication equipment aimed to deceive enemy detection systems in a battlefield.
