Space‐based applications require a precise knowledge of the position of satellites. The orbit of a satellite is constantly changing under the influence of perturbations and it needs to be regularly updated. The process of orbit determination relies on observations coming from telescopes, radars, or lasers providing direction, distance, and/or velocity measurements. A preliminary orbit estimate is defined from three observations, either with range measurements by Gibbs method or with direction measurements only by Laplace or Gauss method. The orbit is then continuously updated with new observations, either in delayed time by least squares or in real time by Kalman filtering.
