The origins of the trajectory optimization problem can be traced to the Brachistochrone problem posed by Johann Bernoulli in 1696. The first noteworthy application of the concept to aviation was in relation to the problems posed and first solved by Zermelo as early as the 1930s. This chapter introduces the most relevant literature, algorithms and models that are commonly adopted for trajectory optimization research around the world. It reviews the fundamental solution techniques and multi‐objective optimality strategies that can be adopted for aircraft trajectory optimisation applications. The chapter outlines useful models for fuel consumption and thrust with respect to current generation turbofan/turbojet and turboprop engines. The operational costs of aircraft are a fundamental aspect of trajectory optimisation. It is necessary, in particular, to capture the economic dependencies on flight time, which is typically a conflicting criterion with respect to fuel consumption and gaseous emissions.
