The Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean (HICO®) is the first spaceborne imaging spectrometer designed to sample the coastal ocean with high spatial (approximately 100 m) and spectral (5.7 nm) sampling, continuous visible and near infrared spectral coverage (380– – 960 nm), and a very high signal‐to‐noise ratio. HICO was designed and built by the Naval Research Laboratory and operated nearly continuously aboard the International Space Station from September 2009 through September 2014, collecting nearly 10,000 images. HICO substantially exceeded the one year of operation required to capture all seasons and the three year goal to provide time series imagery. Data are available to researchers through a website hosted by Oregon State University (http://hico.coas.oregonstate.edu) and at NASA's Ocean Color website (http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov). The data have enabled ocean color scientists and managers to assess data quality and apply the imagery to a variety of scientific and societal problems, including shallow water bathymetric mapping, detecting and identifying benthic features, monitoring water quality, and assessing impacts from extreme events. The modest development and construction cost of HICO combined with the high quality of the data suggests a path forward towards more capable systems for assessing the health of coastal ecosystems and responses to important stressors related to climate change and population growth, even in times of increasing fiscal constraint.
