This chapter examines the static aeroelastic behaviour of a rigid aerofoil supported upon a torsional spring. It explains the aerodynamic lift distribution on a flexible wing fixed at the root using a simple aeroelastic model involving wing twist, and the divergence condition. The chapter also considers the influence of the aircraft trim on the divergence speed and lift distribution for a simple heave/pitch model combined with a flexible wing torsion branch mode. The static aeroelastic behaviour is considered initially using an iterative approach and then a direct (single step) approach. The chapter introduces a simple aeroelastic wing model that demonstrates how wing sweep changes the static aerodynamic lift and aeroelastic behaviour. The differences between wings with forward or backward sweep are emphasized.
