Despite their supremacy as significant tourist destinations, the ports of islands in the Southern Mediterranean area lag behind when it comes to meeting contemporary requirements with respect to security measures. The present paper focuses on analyzing port users' attitudes and perceptions regarding security threats, as well as modeling the travelers' choice of port under alternative security scenarios. A methodology is developed aiming to identify the interrelationship between the causal factors of attitudes and perceptions and port choice.
A case study is presented for the island of Chios in Greece. The data collection methodology involved the development of an innovative questionnaire to collect both revealed and stated preference data, as well as attitudinal and perceptual indicators regarding port security. Two hundred questionnaires were collected in 2009 and 2010 and the results were analyzed in order to illuminate traveler's attitudes, perceptions and choices. The estimated model provides insights on the impact of security perceptions on port choice behavior and suggests that the probability of a terrorist attack is indeed a significant factor affecting port choice. The model application suggests willingness to pay figures, for the implementation of security measures to avoid terrorist attacks, under alternative probability event scenarios.
