This chapter presents an overview of combined cycle propulsion (CCP) concepts and highlights basic technology challenges that must be overcome to develop them. There are two classes of aerospace propulsion systems based on chemical energy: air‐breathing and rocket engines. To establish requirements for CCP, hypersonic air‐breathing vehicles may be separated into two major groups: accelerators, exo‐atmospheric, or space access vehicles that must continually produce excess thrust and cruisers, endo‐atmospheric vehicles flying within Earth's atmosphere. CCP is required for both types of vehicles. A turboramjet, a hybrid cycle concept that combines a turbojet and a ramjet may enable a vehicle to fly up to Mach 5. To meet operational requirements, the early National AeroSpace Plane program reviewed many vehicle configurations and studied extensively many CCP options, including: Single‐Stage‐To‐Orbit vehicles, and Two‐Stage‐To‐Orbit vehicles.
