For many industry drive utilizations, the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) offers an attractive choice owing to its key factors: high power density and efficiency. In situations that require high dynamic motor performance, commonly used approaches include “field‐oriented control (FOC)” or “direct torque control (DTC).” With the recent emergence of powerful and fast processors, computationally efficient model predictive control (MPC) approaches have gained popularity in motor drives. Due to the evident advantages, such as strong dynamic control, simple incorporation of nonlinearities and constraints, and multivariable operation, MPC is a viable method in electric drives. In this chapter, the optimal control concepts of finite control set MPC (FCSMPC) for the PMSM drive are discussed with the support of discrete mathematical models. The constraints in FCSMPC for motor drives are presented, and considering this, the currently available research on modified FCSMPC is discussed. Finally, the real‐time implementation of FCSMPC for motor drives is deliberated.
