On the basis of documentary facts, the pioneering role of K.E. Tsiolkovsky in the development of projects bioregenerative life-support systems, who first proposed the concept of creating a closed nature-like habitat for people in space. The decisive contribution of S.P. Korolev in the first practical implementation of the projects of K.E. Tsiolkovsky to build prototypes of space settlements based on the creation of artificial ecosystems is presented. The influence of V.I. Vernadsky, who created the doctrine of the Earth’s biosphere and the successful implementation of the first project to create an artificial ecosystem (the program “Bios”, Krasnoyarsk, 1964 - 1984), initiated by S.P. Korolev, on the concept of building artificial ecosystems, implemented much later in various countries (USA, Japan, China) is described.
