Theory is advanced that air transportation by supersonic transports (SST) will remain competitive costwise with surface transportation if SST's are used in long-haul operations over good routes, SST's carry somewhat larger payloads than present jets, and operating costs are proportional to cost/speed ratios of present jets; charts show difficulty SST's will have in achieving their speed capabilities; problems involved, such as ground turnaround times and scheduling requirements.
