Systems and methods for detecting lane boundaries and lane positions are described. The method receives an image from a front-facing vehicle camera 312 and applies a geometric transformation (e.g. affine) to the image to create a birds-eye view (800) of the image. The method analyzes the birds-eye or overhead view of the image using a neural network, which was previously trained using images from side-facing vehicle cameras 314, and determines a lane position associated with the birds-eye image. The analyzing could involve separating the birds-eye view into a plurality of segments (808), each of which is then analyzed to identify a lane boundary (804). The system could further communicate a warning to a driver or activate a control to steer the vehicle into a different lane position.
