A platoon of closely spaced vehicles is one of the important issues in Intelligent Vehicle-Highway System (IVHS). The object of the platooning system is to guarantee the platooning safety, stability, as well as comfort on maintaining a close spacing between vehicles. It is obviously important to develop longitudinal control algorithms in control of the close spacing. In this paper, the platoon driving process is analyzed. According to vehicle dynamics and the definition of safe distance, spacing deviation model is made considering vehicle position, velocity, and acceleration. And, a fuzzy sliding mode controller is designed for longitudinal spacing control. The proposed controller guarantees not only individual vehicle driving stability, but also platooning stability with respect to unknown time varying disturbance. Simulations are made for the longitudinal spacing control between the preceding car and the controlled one, which illustrates the good performance of the proposed controller.
