Climate change is a threat multiplier that is forcing ports to change how they operate. To tackle this, new technologies such as electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and automation and autonomous systems will become normalized in the industry. How ports engage with those new technologies, and how they take advantage of them, will determine their efficiency and long-term sustainability in a changing climate. These new technologies will allow ports to participate in an electrified economy and the hydrogen economy with new tools and assets that will decarbonize their inventories while augmenting efficiency and diversifying revenue streams. Electrical shunter trucks and automated loading process systems can improve the attractiveness and operational efficiency of small ports that are transitioning to a sustainable and electrified economy. Lastly, taking advantage of these new technologies will allow ports to leverage existing carbon and energy markets to financially support their transformation and profit from their decarbonization processes.
