Extensive service running and road tests of prototype Kestrel built by Brush Electrical Engineering Co with dynamometer car established heavy duty characteristics of 110 mph locomotive continuously rated at 4000 hp; load consisted of train made up of electrically-braked mobile test units supplemented by rheostatic brake power of Class 86 a-c electric locomotive; test program involved 91 separate measurements from test instruments installed on locomotive, which fed signals to three multichannel recorders in dynamometer car; apart from special test runs, Krestrel has spent much of its time hauling coal trains of about 1500 tons over comparatively level Eastern Region route.
