Report describes flight tests on Hawker Siddeley Kestrel, first VTOL jet aircraft in service anywhere in world; it has speed range from backward flight to greater than Mach 1, without auto-stabilization; trials were mainly qualitative, since object was to assess acceptability of aircraft for squadron service; discussion is concentrated on more interesting aspects of V/STOL operation, such as stability in hovering and in accelerating transition to conventional flight, VTOL and STOL take-off and landing techniques, rough ground operation and V/STOL night flying.
