Fuels with octane numbers of 85 to 90 will soon be available; they offer advantages of greater fuel economy and better-on-road performance; if high octane fuels are to be exploited for these potential benefits, engine designers must resort to higher compression ratios and supercharging for increased intake manifold pressure; present day engines are not equipped to operate under these more stringent conditions.
