Handling qualities investigation was undertaken to determine variation of pilots' opinion with lateral-directional control cross-coupling effects; visual flight task which included hovering, accelerating and decelerating transitions, and steep angle approaches were used to give pilots realistic function to perform while assessing various configurations; results indicate quite small area on control cross-coupling graph over which pilots' ratings were in "normal operation" region, but very large region for "emergency operation".
