Investigations suggest that clay and oil contained in colloidal film of contamination on railway rails are main factors, causing sharp drop in coefficient of static friction after fall of atmospheric precipitation such as dew or short rain which upsets relation found to exist between coefficient of static friction and relative humidity of air; traces of lubricating oil on rails prevent locomotives from developing high coefficients of adhesion; removal of oil coatings from friction surfaces of rails is one of important steps towards raising friction properties of rails.
