Radiation charts are developed for model planetary atmosphere composed of 15% CO2 and 85% N2 by volume; composition is considered representative of Martian atmosphere; effect of varying CO2 concentration in CO2-N2 atmosphere and effect of percentage of argon are studied for specific flight condition; self-absorption of radiation within gas is examined and found to be of significance in limiting total amount of radiation leaving volume of gas; results are applied to large spacecraft for which radiant heating is determined during braking maneuver within Martian atmosphere.
