Systematic study is made of emission and absorption of thermal radiation by cavities and of transport of thermal radiation through passages; conditions under which cavity absorption characteristics can be inferred from cavity emission characteristics (and vice versa) are derived; in particular, it is shown that this reciprocity is valid when radiation entering cavity is diffusely distributed across cavity opening; available information on cavity-emission and absorption characteristics is brought together, compared, and generalized; transport of thermal radiation through passages which connect isothermal environments is analyzed for specularly and duffusely reflecting passage walls.
