Two advances in Polaris Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) launching system, developed by Westinghouse Electric Corp, open way for launching of larger versions of Navy missile; all of final 22 ships in 41 Polaris SSBN program will have new launch tube suspension system and steam launcher; liquid springs were replaced by bands of polyurethane foam around tube, which absorb shock; basic Westinghouse Mark 17 Model 2 launch tube was modified to accept double mattress of foam; steam launcher blasts out missile with live steam, generated by exhaust of small solid propellant rocket thrusting through chamber of water.
