A system for detecting a cut-in vehicle that is configured to receive a radar signal and has a processor to determine a region of interest between an own vehicle and preceding vehicle. The system is implemented into an adaptive cruise control system where upon entering the detection zone the cut-in vehicle is evaluated as a new front vehicle and followed. Figure 5 shows the process of detecting and selecting the cut-in vehicle as a new front vehicle whereby the speed, distance from own vehicle, heading and acceleration of the cut-in vehicle is considered against predetermined thresholds.
