A two-dimensional (lateral and longitudinal) vehicle control strategy for obstacle avoidance is presented. Comparisons with one dimensional systems indicate that combined longitudinal deceleration (braking) and low g lateral displacement (steering) result in greater obstacle avoidance capability and a more comfortable ride.
