The application of a modular payload support structure (MPSS) was analyzed for different Spacelab payloads. It was demonstrated that with a basis inventory of MPSS structure elements, sufficient flexibility can be achieved to support the envisaged range of space transformation system (STS) payloads. The MPSS structure is used as a carrier for the shuttle pallet satellite (SPAS). It utilizes a construction principle that satisfies future payload requirements at small structure cost compared with the total project cost. The performance characteristics of MPSS and its development status is given. A potential MPSS inventory is proposed and costed.
