The structural support required for various future experimental STMS payloads is defined and their required subsystem support is identified. The three different mission modes considered include the STS sortie mode the power module supported mode, and the free flying mode. A number of experiments and payloads were investigated with respect to their subsystems and structural requirements. Three structural modular concepts were defined and measured against the payload requirements. One structural concept called the panel structure was found to be most favorable with respect to flexibility in accepting payloads. Three payloads were further studied in order to define structural elements and the required subsystem support. Cost estimates were performed for the development/manufacturing programs of the structures and for a limited program of STS missions in the three different modes.
