The Alaska State Highway Department is considering plans to construct an extension of the Copper River Highway. The extension would connect the coastal city of Cordova, Alaska with the Alaska State Highway System. Construction of the proposed highway would require destruction of all vegetation beneath the highway embankment. Brush and a few trees would also be removed from an area adjacent to the embankment along the right of way. Wildlife will probably use the cleared right of way for their own access within the area. This would tend to bring animals into close proximity with traffic. Stream crossings would be necessary but unnecessary stream siltation, re-channeling and bank disruption would be avoided. Excavation of material borrow sites for obtaining construction materials results in a hole.
