A lecture given to mechanical engineers, which was backed up by a set of figures that are listed but not given, is presented. Reasons why the Trent was launched are given together with a brief description of the configuration of the engine. Explanations for some of the major decisions taken to date are given, and the aircraft market is discussed. The status of the test program is covered and some of the significant test results obtained to date are discussed.
