The report presents the results of a comprehensive review and analysis of existing information on service requirements for highway bridge railings. A number of relevant topics are discussed. These include: vehicle characteristics, barrier configurations and heights, accident data, effects of curbs, tolerable rates of deceleration, and barrier test conditions. The report outlines the current barrier design process and examines strength and height requirements. Areas where information is inadequate and research is needed are identified.
