Methanol (methyl alcohol) has been used as a combustion fuel since the seventeenth century, although mostly for illumination and as a heat source. Since the early twentieth century, however, it has been used successfully as an internal combustion engine fuel, especially for racing or as a replacement for gasoline in times of fuel scarcity. While it is currently made at a commercial scale from natural gas, it is the easiest motor fuel to produce directly from waste biomass, making it a promising candidate as a future fuel.

This chapter covers all aspects of methanol as a transportation fuel, from production through fuel control, and its role as a transition fuel, bridging the gap from fossil fuels to electric-only vehicle power.
