For pt.II see ibid., vol.AES-22, no.3, p.228 (1986). Successful satellite control experiments on Japan's Sakura communications satellite (CS) are reported. A method of accurate orbit determination using tracking data obtained at a single Earth station was developed. The station-keeping tolerance was reduced to +or-0.03 deg and the maneuvers were performed for a few months. A simplified method of east-west station-keeping, which did not need any sophisticated orbit calculation program, was developed and was examined for three months. The attitude tolerance was reduced to 0.02 deg in order to point the CS's antenna exactly to Japan by using the Sun and Earth sensor data. The pointing of the CS antenna, which was varied by orbital inclination, was compensated by attitude control and east-west offset of the despun antenna, and it became possible to continue communication experiments even after the termination of north-south station-keeping maneuvers.
