It has been considered that 2-stroke engine is not'able to meet requirements of the Japanese exhaust emission standard of 1978. However, we have been able to bring Suzuki 2-stroke engine to the prescribed level by employing newly developed 2-stage catalyst system which uses the improved catalyst. The aimes of the 2-stage catalyst system are 1) to have larger SV. 2) to supply ample secondary air. In consequence, the system is able to lower the operating temperature of the catalyst, which results in it's longer life. We have succeeded in development of specially surface-treated catalyst very much improved in HC-reduction, heat resistance and durability.
