Turbocharging matching for automotive diesel engines is a complex process and involves a compromise between maximum power, torque back-up, engine speed range, thermal and mechanical constraints and smoke emission. The reasons behind the problems of insufficient boost at low engine speeds is explained in terms of the 'natural' characteristic of boost increasing with speed. Measures to alleviate this problem, based on current technology components, are presented together with their limitations. These include rematching, the use of an exhaust waste gate, tailored fuelling schedule and reduced engine speed range. (Buehn)
