The paper refers to the development of steam machinery in the immediate post-war years. It starts from the DARING Class Machinery, and comments on the first post-war design (Y.100) and the still-born YEAD-1 Machinery. The emergence of the combined steam/gas turbine plant and development of the present gas turbine propulsion plant is referred to. Emphasis is placed on the information to be gained from shore trials and from ship trials. The paper highlights the approach to the solution of various problems: apparently easy ones which turned out to be quite difficult; and great fears which were found to be groundless. The changes in emphasis on various desirable parameters, which occur from time to time, are commented on.
