Development requirements for future aircraft components, like increased reliability and reduced life cycle costs can be realised by new design concepts and/or materials with improved properties. In the case of new materials the high nitrogen martensitic steel CRONIDUR 30 (X30CrMoN15-1) demonstrated improved bearing performance over the well known conventional steels, M50, M50NiL, SAE52100 and AISI440C. In full lubrication conditions CRONIDUR 30 shows 80 times the calculated L10 bearing life, whereas the M50 and SAE52100 reach the expected lives. Also in boundary lubrication conditions without and with predamaged races the high nitrogen steel shows a significantly better behaviour compared with the conventional steels. This improved performance characteristics of the CRONIDUR 30 over nowadays used steels is attributed to the unique chemistry and the pressure remelting process, which results in a fine and uniform microstructure combined with conventional balanced properties regarding hardness, toughness and corrosion resistance.
