Key words for the GDI engine are 'the freedom of mixture preparation' and 'the freedom of engine management' , particularly of torque control. The authors have been engaged in the development of an integrated engine-management technology, named as 'the GDI Sigma series' which includes applications of improved CVT, idle-stop system, turbo-charging and hybrid system. This paper describes the excellent startability and engine management available from the GDI engine embodied with a new idle-stop system named as the Gasoline Direct-Injection Automatic Stop&Go (GDI-ASG). The authors outline the importance of idle-stopping and describe the idle-stop system adopted in the GDI engine (objective, piston locations at engine-stop condition, ignition characteristic and combustion at the engine start, occurrence conditions of autoignition and its prevention, characteristics of the second combustion cylinder and consequent engine vibration). The construction of the GDI-ASG system, performance of the vehicle equipped with the GDI-ASG system, fuel saving effectiveness at the engine starting and emission-control performance are discussed.
