This paper presents results of some processing and materials variations for used in armor systems that provide protection against small arms ball rounds. Different fiber types, paraaramid and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), are included in the discussion. Resin systems considered include polyethylene, Kraton(registered trademark) rubber, and rubbertoughened phenolic. Most of the armor systems considered incorporate ceramics as part of the armor package; ceramics considered include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, a ceramic matrix composite, and boron carbide. The effect of material selection and material processing on the extent of transient deformation which occurs during the impact event, armor system mass efficiency and armor system multiple-hit performance is discussed.
