Ballistic trials on 4.7 mm TIMETAL 15-3 plates were tested against two common small arms (rifles): 7.62 x 39 mm M43 Soviet ball and 5.56 x 45 mm M855 NATO ball. The aim of the testing was to identify trends in performance that would be applicable to the use of the alloy in various types of armor systems. The best overall ballistic performance was obtained when the plate was aged to ultimate tensile strength of 1240 Mpa. Although at the thickness tested the titanium plate alone was not capable of defeating the selected threats at muzzle velocity, it was found to be potentially effective as a face plate when used in front of flexible body armor materials.
