Handling performance decay due to a simpler rear suspension layout, Mc-Pherson rather then Multilink, comfort specialized can be compensate adopting a 4WS control system. Two different 4WS Controller solutions have been presented. The first control strategy, based on a closed loop controller, was designed to reproduce the reference vehicle handling behavior. This controller, named Virtual Model Following, compensates the handling gap between the two different suspension layouts, while the new suspension, comfort specialized in terms of high longitudinal flexibility and big increment of wheel base in bump travel, achieves an excellent comfort result. This 4WS system, named target controller, uses rear steer angles to minimizes side slip angle in transient and steady state response and to knock down time delay between lateral acceleration and yaw rate. A very important consequence is the possibility to maximize comfort performance using a mechanical approach, while handling gap compensation and the possible maximization can be demanded to 4WS system. Moreover using for the 4WS controller the Virtual Model Following structure it is possible to characterize vehicle handling performance.
