The aim of the InMaK (Innovative Magnesium Combined Structures for Car Bodies) project is to solve the problems for the application of magnesium alloys in the construction of vehicles and to use magnesium materials with favourable alloying elements which additionally enable the recycling of die casting and extruded components without prior separation. The described problems are: low extrusion ramspeed, reduced alloy spectrum especially concerning wrought alloys, low forming capacity of component as well as a low ductility and damage tolerance, missing simulation and failure models for a magnesium suitable dimensioning of supporting and crash relevant car body structures, missing of an adapted welding technique especially of mixed (die cast and extruded) structures. Further this paper describes the implemented processes (material development, material simulation, developments in the extrusion process, welding rods production and developments in the welding process (arc welding and laser beam welding).
