The radar type and antenna design for the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rain radar are discussed. Under the severe requirements of rapid scanning to provide contiguous coverage of the swath and the limited maximum output power of the final stage power amplifier, there are only two radar types: A passive array with TWTA and ferrite phase shifters and an active array with SSPAs and PIN diode phase shifters. The passive array with TWTA is the more conventional solution, while the active array with SSPA is still under development. There are two primary antenna designs, the planar antenna and the cylindrical parabolic antenna. The TRMM radar is expected to operate at two frequencies (14 and 24 GHz) and other designs are possible according to the beam matching at the two frequencies. Designs with suitable performances face further selection on the basis of other reasons, such as, packaging efficiency or weight.
