A case study of the rain radar system for the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) has been conducted by considering three major competitive items, which are (1) pulse compression radar vs conventional type radar, (2) active array radar with SSPA vs passive array radar with TWTA, and (3) antenna types (planar array antenna vs cylindrical parabolic antenna). Six different cases were studied, and characteristic parameters, power consumptions, weights, and sizes of these cases are described. Trade-off studies of these cases are made and the nonpulse compression active array radar with planar array is considered to be the most suitable candidate for the dual frequency rain radar for TRMM considering the present status of technology.
