The development of the residual stresses in hotrolled railroad rails during the cooling process is investigated by the Finite Element Method using temperature dependent material data and an elastoviscoplastic material law. The time-history of the temperature distribution over the cross-section involving different boundary conditions and cooling strategies is analysed. The heat flux by radiation and convection has different values at each point of the rail surface varying with time. Using this time-history the calculations of the corresponding residual stresses shows compressive stresses at the surface of the head and tensile stresses in the middle of the foot of the rail in good agreement with experiments. The influence of the transformation induced plasticity on the final stress level is determinated.
