This paper describes the application of Pontryagin's principle of optimization to control law design for computer-controlled vehicle suspension systems. The approach represents a significant generalization to the standard Linear-Quadratic optimal control scheme, and offers the suspension designer substantial freedom and flexibility for the development of suitable control laws. Examples are used to demonstrate the feasibility of the design methodology, as well as to illustrate some of the technical problems that arise.
